The Story Behind eBite Light
#The Beginning of eBite
The eBite journey began under the original brand name eBITe — a name rooted in the Korean language. Here, ‘BIT’ means light, and ‘e’ represents teeth — together symbolizing “the light that shines between the teeth.”
To address the long-standing challenge of intraoral illumination, development of eBite began in 2005, evolving through a series of innovations:
# eBite1
The Portable eBite (also known as eBite1) combines an LED light with a bite block, providing direct illumination inside the oral cavity. It offers efficient, shadow-free lighting in a variety of clinical settings — including outreach care, oral examinations, and treatment for patients with disabilities.
# eBite3 (Ver 2.0)
Conventional loupe lights often required dedicated eyewear and external battery packs, making them cumbersome to use during treatment. To solve this, eBite3 was designed with a clip-on structure that allows it to be easily attached or detached from any type of glasses or loupe. It can be mounted or removed effortlessly — even in the middle of a procedure — and provides up to 10 hours of continuous use on a single charge, making it ideal for a wide range of dental treatments, including surgical procedures.
# eBite3S
Building on the strengths of the original eBite3, the eBite3S delivers enhanced lighting performance, a wider range of angle adjustment, and improved durability with a refined design. It adopts a lens-mounted illumination system for evenly distributed, high-quality light and provides up to 3 hours of continuous use on a single charge. Beyond dental applications, its superior brightness and ergonomic design make it highly valued in other clinical fields — including dermatology and otorhinolaryngology (ENT) — where precise and stable lighting is essential.
# eBite3S Blue Light
In recent years, clear aligner therapy has rapidly gained popularity in the dental field. Beginning with Invisalign, clear aligners have drawn global attention for their aesthetic advantages. However, they require frequent replacement of multiple trays, each fixed in place using transparent resin — which poses a key challenge: the resin is nearly invisible to the naked eye.
Traditionally, an assistant would use a handheld UV light to illuminate the resin area, while the clinician struggled to verify the angle and precision directly, resulting in decreased efficiency during procedures. To solve this problem, DENTOZONE developed an innovative solution building on the mechanical strengths of eBite3 and eBite3S.
The eBite3S Blue Light integrates a built-in UV illumination system that allows clinicians to project UV light directly from their line of sight by simply attaching the device to their glasses or loupe. With this hands-free design, clinicians can precisely identify and remove resin areas without an assistant, achieving greater accuracy, efficiency, and control than ever before.

# KOO’s Research Lab
After participating in the world’s largest dental trade show, IDS in 2003 and 2005, we realized how challenging lighting can be during dental procedures, and experienced firsthand the structural limitations of conventional dental lights. That’s when an idea struck: “What if we could illuminate the oral cavity from the inside?” Based on this concept, DENTOZONE began developing an intraoral illumination device in 2005.
The initial model, designed in the form of a retractor with built-in light, received great attention and positive feedback at SIDEX 2006. However, it also revealed several limitations — including manufacturing difficulties, disinfection challenges, sizing issues, and ergonomic constraints.
DENTOZONE then made a bold decision to abandon the previous structure entirely and developed a new model — Portable eBite (also known as eBite1), which combined a detachable bite block with a U-shaped LED light. Unexpectedly, this product became one of DENTOZONE’s core global exports, marking a major turning point in the company’s expansion into international markets.
Portable eBite (eBite1) integrates illumination directly into the bite block (mouth prop), allowing clinicians to achieve mouth opening and lighting simultaneously. It also features a diagnostic function, making it highly practical for home care, elderly or disabled patients, and mobile dental services. Powered by a rechargeable battery, the Portable eBite enables direct intraoral illumination and has sold tens of thousands of units worldwide — with over 10,000 units sold in Japan alone, where it received an especially strong market response.
Interestingly, the Portable eBite was originally a spinoff from the development process of TIPSBITE (2009) — a device that combined illumination and suction functions in one. At the FDI 2009 exhibition in Singapore, a buyer’s request led to the creation of the Portable eBite as a standalone product, marking the beginning of its own successful product line.
# The Beginning of eBite2 Development
As eBite1 gained wide adoption, users began requesting further improvements — particularly for battery replacement convenience and enhanced oral inspection capabilities. Among them, DENTOZONE’s Japanese partner Nissin proposed specific requirements:
A multi-functional device combining illumination and inspection features
An interchangeable rechargeable battery system
A modern design
featuring an LCD display
To meet these demands, DENTOZONE upgraded the original eBite1 structure and initiated the development of eBite2, designed to accommodate two interchangeable probes — a Lighting Probe and an Inspection Probe — on a single main body.
# Key Features and Improvements
Multi-Functional Probe Structure
Lighting Probe
Adopted the same U-shaped structure as eBite1, providing efficient intraoral illumination suitable for general dental procedures. Added a neck-mounted insertion port to connect bite blocks or suction tips.
Inspection Probe
Combined 400nm violet light with white light, enabling the identification of calculus, prosthetics, plaque, and natural teeth by color contrast. By using a safe 400 nm violet wavelength instead of conventional UV, it helps ensure patient safety while enhancing visual diagnostic accuracy through wavelength scattering effects.
However, due to its complex operation and high production cost, the eBite2 was not commercially viable and
was eventually discontinued after its initial production and sales phase.
# Detachable Cordless Surgical Headlight
Lighting plays a critical role in dental treatment, yet conventional dental lights alone are often insufficient. As a result, the use of loupes with mounted lights has rapidly increased in recent years. However, traditional loupe lights require specialized eyewear and an external battery pack worn on the waist, which can be cumbersome during procedures. Building on years of LED intraoral lighting expertise from eBite1 and eBite2, DENTOZONE began developing a new cordless rechargeable LED headlight, inspired by a proposal from Mr. Ko, CEO of the implant company Snucone Korea.
Traditional wired headlights, connected to external battery packs, were often cumbersome to wear and limited movement during dental procedures. To overcome these limitations, DENTOZONE set out to create a simple, cordless, and easily detachable headlight that offers both practicality and freedom of movement.
A spring-loaded clip design was applied, allowing the light to be conveniently attached to any type of eyewear or goggles commonly used by dentists. The illumination power exceeds 20,000 lux, bright enough for intraoral visibility, and features three adjustable brightness levels to suit various procedures. The intuitive button-type control allows for easy adjustment, and depending on brightness, the light can operate for up to 10 continuous hours.
Weighing only 41g, it minimizes fatigue during long procedures. A 700mAh lithium-polymer battery ensures stable operating time, and Micro-USB charging offers compatibility with existing eBite1 and eBite2 chargers. Battery and charging status can be checked at a glance through four LED indicators.
The initial eBite3 Ver. 1.0 (2015) had limitations — its lighting angle was fixed at 30° downward, battery and PCB replacement were not possible, and the touch-type brightness control was inconvenient. To address these issues, eBite3 Ver. 2.0 was newly developed, and later evolved into the eBite3S, which featured improved light quality, an expanded angle adjustment range, replaceable components, and enhanced clip durability. By adopting the same refined design platform as eBite3S, compatibility and user convenience were significantly increased.
For global distribution, the user manual was produced in 10 languages — English, Japanese, French, German, Spanish, Arabic, Portuguese, Russian, Vietnamese, and Korean. The packaging, created in collaboration with the manufacturer of iPhone boxes, reflects a premium look and feel. With its blend of usability, innovation, and performance, eBite3 Ver. 2.0 represents the next-generation lighting solution for dental professionals and is expected to become a new global standard in clinical illumination.
# eBite3S Development Overview and Direction
The eBite3S is an upgraded version of the previous eBite3, developed as part of DENTOZONE’s performance enhancement project in response to customer feedback. This initiative was launched following the remarkable success of exporting 3,660 units to Nissin Dental Inc. (Japan) in 2018 alone.
The main focus of eBite3S development was to overcome the lighting quality limitations identified in the earlier model. To achieve this, the traditional reflector-based lighting system was replaced with a lens-mounted illumination design, significantly improving light clarity and focus for enhanced visibility during dental procedures.
In terms of design, the overall concept and user familiarity of eBite3 were maintained for a seamless transition. The clip mechanism, button control system, spring grip design, battery capacity, brightness adjustment, and even accessories and packaging remained consistent with the previous model.

# eBite3S Blue Light
The eBite3S Blue Light is an upgraded version of DENTOZONE’s eBite3S, developed to help clinicians easily identify clear resin during clear aligner procedures. This model was created at the request of Ci Medical, one of DENTOZONE’s key partners in Japan, to address real challenges faced in clinical environments.
In traditional clear aligner treatments, clinicians often struggle to clearly see the transparent resin used for bonding or removal.
Clinicians typically rely on a handheld UV curing light or assistance from a second operator to illuminate the area — a method that is both inconvenient and prone to inaccuracy.
To solve this issue, DENTOZONE integrated a UV illumination module directly into the eBite3S body, enabling the operator to freely use both hands while viewing and irradiating the target area from the exact line of sight.
A core challenge in development was determining the optimal UV wavelength to make the resin clearly visible.
Drawing on prior experience from eBite2 (which utilized UV-LED technology), the R&D team tested multiple UV wavelength samples through repeated clinical simulations.
After extensive trials, the ideal UV wavelength and LED component were selected to deliver sufficient intensity while minimizing heat and energy loss.
To further enhance irradiation efficiency and uniformity, DENTOZONE designed a custom reflector structure.
Early prototypes explored both lens and reflector approaches, but testing confirmed that reflector-based design was better suited to the optical characteristics of UV light.
The reflector was made compatible with the existing eBite3S housing, maintaining part interchangeability, and a quartz (SiO₂) optical window was used to maximize UV transmittance and durability.
By adding this UV illumination system without altering the proven eBite3S structure, DENTOZONE successfully introduced a practical and ergonomic solution that greatly improves the visibility and precision of resin work in clear aligner treatments.
The eBite3S Blue Light not only enhances procedural efficiency and user convenience but also aligns with global dental trends, positioning DENTOZONE for continued export growth and advancement into high-value product lines.
